Development, Drought and Mature Coastal Redwoods, Torrey Young

This case study will profile the methods and trials and tribulations of managing 17 mature redwoods through demolition and development of a large office complex during extended drought, with no water on site. Topics will include protection, irrigation techniques, soil moisture monitoring (installed soil sensors), irrigation volume calculations, root exploration and management and new landscape planning and installation over a two-year consulting contract.
Torrey Young has worked in arboriculture since 1972. After running a tree care and consulting firm, TREESCAPES, Inc. for 27 years, he is now a full-time Consulting Arborist through his firm, Dryad, LLC. Torrey is an ASCA Registered Consulting Arborist (#282), an ISA Board Certified Master Arborist and Municipal Specialist (#WE-0131B) a CUFC Certified Urban Forester (#121) an ISA Qualified Tree Risk Assessor and a CA licensed contractor (C-27 Landscaping and C-61/D49 Tree Service). He has a long history of work and leadership within professional organizations, and is a recipient of many industry awards. He is a Past President of the American Society of Consulting Arborists (ASCA), currently serving as ASCA’s Representative to the ANSI A300 Committee. He also is serving ISA on the BCMA Test Committee.
